So in January of this year I started updating my island. And like I said in my previous post it looked good till you saw it from different view.
The cabinets on the island were screaming to be painted the same color. The also had wear on them so it wasn’t like I was painting over a good finish. Six months later I finally convinced my husband to “let me” paint the cabinets. But under strict instructions I was to only paint the island cabinets. Which was fine and dandy with me, I don’t think I have the patience and follow through to do ALL the rest of the cabinets.
I had left over Simply Sage paint from the front of the island but it was just simple inexpensive latex paint. From all my reading I wasn’t sure it would do the trick. It would cover it for a little bit but I doubted it would last as the kids push chairs into the island to help cook or I scrubbed sticky hand prints off. So I researched or more aptly read blog after blog titled “the right way to paint cabinets.” I came across one or two that talked of self leveling and enamel type paints. I headed to Ace because it’s the helpful place and it was the only place in town that carried this type of paint.
They easily matched my Simple Sage in a quart. The only real draw back of this paint is the price, I’m used to paying a lot less for paint, but only because I’m cheap.
I also picked up a extra strong primer.
So I removed the drawers and cabinet doors. I softly sanded everything, paying extra attention to areas that get the most wear. And applied a coat of primer.
I wish I had pictures of how you brush the Benjamin Moore paint on and you see the brush strokes disappear as the self leveling magic does it’s trick. But alas I didn’t take any. But I did take some after shots. And I am so glad we finished it, I love the island.
I have hope that we’ll be able to paint the rest of the cabinets soon. As in we I mean hire someone to do it. I would love to see some super light gray color on the others, very similar to the following inspiration photo.
