Banister makeover

Banister makeover

I am not the most patient of people (brief pause for laughter from my family), so looking back I wish I would have taken the time to take a lot more photos of the house before we started changing things. The light in the stairwell for instance, it was a weird shape and the gold paint was peeling off. We’re not here to really talk about the light but you’ll notice that it too changed. Our friends actually came over to help do some big things right after we moved and one of them was to switch out the light. It took some creative thinking on how to replace it. Note our friend that has one leg on one ladder and another over the banister on another ladder. Be safe guys.

Also notice the color of the banister- that isn’t white. It’ s a cream color. All of the trim in the house was cream. ALL OF IT! So we have painted all of the trim in the house white now. All. of. it. The only cream left is the upstairs doors, all 12 of them, but that’s a project for another day. Not only was the banister cream it was D-I-R-T-Y. Hand oil and dirt has turned the banister a dirty cream color. That being said  I took note that when I went to upgrade the banister I would want to pick a color that would hide some of the hand prints.

I had just finished my table, I used Rust-oleum furniture transformation kit in their Espresso Glazed tint.  And I had some left over so naturally I looked around and thought “what else could I paint?”

So after a tedious taping job, on all the spindles, around the carpet and floor. I know once again I am shocking my family and others that know me, in the past I would just jump right in and never take the time to tape first. I first painted the base coat of the Rust-oleum kit on the handrail and the large supporting spindles or I’ve recently learned they are also called balusters. After waiting the required time (no I didn’t rush the time) I applied the glaze. It took me a few months to finish and paint the smaller balusters/spindles white. The cream didn’t look awful… from a distance.

Someday the carpet will need to be replaced. It’ll be interesting what we end up going with since the current carpet is warmer and more brownish than I’d like.

I actually will be repainted the handrail and major balusters again because I didn’t get the protective varnish on it in time and the middle baluster has already started scratching up. But I’m still happy with the overall change.

What else have I painted?  Stay tuned for the basement bathroom redo.
